What time is it? Ah, here I am again, doing my usual thing this time of the night or is it already morning?
Just finished watching “Once in a Summer” starring Lee Byung Hun and Soo Ae. I must admit, I wasn’t expecting much from this film but it turned out to be such a moving drama, so compelling that I found myself crying towards the end of the film. I actually hate it when a movie makes me cry. But then, no matter how hard I try to keep myself from crying, I just can’t. My goodness, “Once in a Summer” is nearly impeccable!
The film, mostly set in 1969 Korea tells the story of Suk-young (played so convincingly by Lee Byung Hun), a rich kid who in the year of turbulence in Korea joins his fellow students to do volunteer work in the countryside one beautiful summer. There he meets Jung-In, a town librarian whom he instantly gets attracted with. Yes, he fell in love with her at first sight.
But the journey to love will never be easy. This movie proves that love alone can’t keep two people together. Or maybe, it is making us realize that real love is not merely having that someone beside us, but knowing that even if we aren’t with them, love continues to burn. And though, one had to leave this earth, the memories of their love will forever live. Ah golly, here I am crying once again…
